Delhi Police Chief Gets Special Power Under National Security Act: Report
On October 20, 2022 by RamanDelhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena has reportedly issued an order authorizing the city’s police commissioner to detain individuals under the National Security Act (NSA) if they are perceived as a threat to the national capital, as per sources from the Press Trust of India on Thursday. The directive, effective from Wednesday, will remain in force until January 18 of the following year.
Under this authorization, the police commissioner is granted the power to take preventive measures, detaining individuals identified as potential threats to the security of the national capital.
The official notification refers to subsection 2 of section 3 of the NSA, which empowers the central or state government, when satisfied that an individual may act in a manner prejudicial to the security of the state or the maintenance of public order, to issue an order for their preventive detention. This move reflects a proactive approach to address potential threats and uphold public safety in the region.
